Alt clean up days are our biggest yet
07/02/2023
Our community waste collection days came to the Alt neighbourhood last month, in our biggest clean up yet.
The days were organised by our Neighbourhood Care and Neighbourhoods teams in partnership with Oldham Council and contractor, Tyson Construction, which is delivering our £6.1m, 38-home new build scheme on Cherry Avenue in the area.
Bulky household items like sofas, bikes, furniture, TVs, fridges and washing machines were among the things that local people disposed of in free skips 24-26 January.
Our colleagues were on hand litter picking too, while our friends at Oldham Council talked to residents about recycling, wheelie bins and the potential problems caused by putting waste in the wrong bins – all of which can cause problems in the neighbourhood.
Here's a snapshot of what the clean up achieved …
David Wrigley our Head of Neighbourhood Care said:
“The community waste collection days in Alt are the biggest since we launched our waste management strategy in autumn 2022.
“We want to provide great neighbourhoods and unfortunately, fly tipping and litter are persistent issues in the area. This rubbish has a negative impact on the neighbourhood and we spend a lot of time removing abandoned items – putting pressure on our services and diverting money and resources away from other important services for our customers. The days of action are part of our plan to support Oldham Council’s Don’t Trash Oldham campaign and help reduce the amount of rubbish dumped locally to make a difference for people.
“Following the clean-up, we’re encouraging residents to keep their neighbourhood looking green and clean and we’re planning engagement with Alt Academy to help pass on our messages to the next generation too.”
Joel Owen, our Director of Development said: “Support with these clean up days is the latest social value activity from our contractor Tyson Construction as the Cherry Avenue scheme progresses, and we're pleased to be partnering with a team committed to making a positive and lasting impact in our communities."
Our waste management strategy 2022-25
Our community waste collection days are among the actions in our Waste Management Strategy 2022-25. To further clamp down on fly tipping in our neighbourhoods we’re also stepping up enforcement action against those who dump rubbish - issuing charges starting at £132 and ensuring the items are cleared, as well as carrying out community litter picks and improving bin facilities for communal blocks.
