Great British Spring Clean kicks off

21/03/2025

We’ve launched a series of litter-picking events to support the Great British Spring Clean initiative, starting with a successful cleanup at our West Vale development in Oldham.

To align with the national initiative that runs from March 21 to April 6, we will support local groups and communities across the town. Through donations, grant funds and by suppling volunteers for a host of clean ups including with Northern Lily undertaking a paddle board litter pick on the Rochdale Canal and at Ridgefield Street and Marlborough Drive on March 29, and a litter pick at Barker Street on April 4.

Other events we’re involved with include litter picks organised by Failsworth Walking Group, Yuvanis Foundation and Tensing Street Community Group.

With just weeks to go until the completion of 88 new homes at our £20 million West Vale development, we recently teamed up with our construction partner, Caddick Construction, and Oldham Council to clean up the surrounding streets.

Three skips - donated by Caddick - were filled, 30 bags of rubbish collected, and advice was given to our customers living near the site about their bin use by the council.

“We are absolutely delighted to be playing our part in helping keep Oldham clean and tidy during the Great British Spring Clean - a national event that is really taking hold in our town,” said David Wrigley, FCHO’s Head of Neighbourhood Care.

“We are also supporting our customers in partnership with Oldham Council to educate them in how to dispose of their rubbish properly and their responsibilities to make sure where they live is clean and tidy and somewhere proud to call home.

“I would like to thank our colleague volunteers and those brilliant volunteer groups we are working with and supporting for getting stuck in across Oldham over the coming weeks of the Great British Spring Clean.

“It really shows a big commitment to improve our communities by Oldhamers.”

Dave Saville, Regional Managing Director for Caddick Construction North West, commented: “Before a spade had hit the ground on the West Vale development, the question of how it will improve and contribute to the local community is really important. We are proud to have our team contribute their time, alongside FCHO, in this community scheme, and help to keep the streets of Oldham tidy for its residents.

“Alongside our team’s physical presence, Caddick also donated three skips, a roadsweep, litter pickers and refuse sacks to help things run smoothly for the two teams. As we reach competition on this fantastic development, we look forward to handing over these new, affordable, green homes to the local community.”
