International Women’s Day at Alt Cafe
10/03/2025
International Women’s Day was marked at First Choice Homes Oldham’s (FCHO) Alt Community Centre with a series of special events.
We invited from Oldham College's beauty therapy students to give residents free beauty treatments such as manicures to help them develop their experience in their chosen career path.
Stronger Communities Manager, Naomi Martin-Smith gave a talk about her career journey as a woman and a mother of five children.
A special lunch was also laid on to mark the day.
“It’s really positive and important to empower women in our local community, some of them have a tough time with family and prioritising themselves," said Naomi.
“And by sharing our experiences and talking about our ambitions and motivations, we can encourage each other to focus more on looking after ourselves.”
One resident, Ellen Taylor, 36, from Alt estate, said it was her first time in the community centre, she had her nails done on the day and was pleased to have some time for self-care and a break from her three children.
“I never usually take time out for myself but it has been brilliant. It’s important for women to empower each other and appreciate each other for what we do,” she explained.
"Every day I am doing things for others and caring for my kids, today is all about having appreciation for myself – which I know is important.”
Neighbourhood coordinator, for Alt and Glodwick, Kelsey Warwick has worked with the residents for just under a year, she said: “The women here are amazing, they will go above and beyond to help others, but today is all about uplifting them and giving them the special attention they deserve for everything they do for the local community.
It'd be great to host more events like these that encourage everyone to come together.”
International Women's Day is a global day celebrating the social, economic, cultural, and political achievements of women. This year’s theme is Accelerate Action for gender equality.
