Marking Global Asbestos Awareness Week
04/04/2024
It is Global Asbestos Awareness Week and reminding customers on what to do if they have any questions about asbestos or are planning to carry out DIY at their home.
What is asbestos?
Asbestos is a very strong natural fibre that can be found in rocks. It is not dangerous if it is in good condition and left alone.
Asbestos was widely used in houses and buildings before it was banned in 1999 so any property built before 2000 can contain asbestos.
In our housing stock there are certain properties that contain asbestos. Even if there is asbestos in your home, it is NOT usually a serious problem.
Can asbestos be dangerous?
Left alone, asbestos is not dangerous. However, once disturbed, tiny asbestos fibres are released which can cause lung disease and cancer if breathed in.
Planning home improvements and think you may have asbestos at your property?
If you think you have asbestos in your home, it is vitally important for your safety and those living in your home that you seek permission from us before you carry out any alterations or improvements.
