Seven tonnes of rubbish removed at latest community waste collection days
06/09/2023
Seven tonnes of waste removed, 25 bags of litter collected, and six skips filled with rubbish. These are just some of the successes achieved when our community waste collection days came to Bardsley and Werneth last month.
The sessions were made possible with support from our contractor partners who donated free-to-use skips to help local people get rid of unwanted items.
Wates, which is delivering investment work in customers' homes this year, backed the session in Bardsley on 22 August, and Caddick Construction, which is building our West Vale affordable housing development of 88 new homes in Coldhurst, sponsored activity in Werneth on 24 August.
Bed frames, sofas, chairs, white goods, broken toys and old TVs were among the items disposed of by residents who made the most of the opportunity to have a clear out.
Members of Oldham Council's Waste Management team joined in to provide recycling information and advice to residents, while volunteers carried out litter picks in each neighbourhood to help make a bigger impact.
David Wrigley, our Head of Neighbourhood Care said: "These two days were a fantastic team effort between us and our partners and are great example of how we can get more out of our work by maximising social value to achieve better outcomes in our communities.
“Community waste collection days are part of our on-going work to address high volumes of fly tipping and waste in our neighbourhoods. No one wants to live in a place blighted by rubbish and we're committed to working with local people to tackle the issue.
"Feedback from residents told us they welcomed these sessions to get rid of their bulky waste and help tidy up the neighbourhoods. Now we're asking residents to do their bit and get rid of their rubbish carefully to keep the neighbourhoods neat and tidy."
Nick Daperis, Project Manager at Wates Living Space, said: “We were pleased to assist FCHO with skips and support from our team at the Bardsley waste collection day. Wates always look to help the local communities, and it was a very productive day and great to see the impact made.”
Faye Chilekwa, Social Value Coordinator at Caddick Construction, said: “It was great to collaborate with FCHO to deliver the Werneth community clean up. These types of initiatives go a long way towards encouraging recycling, disposing of waste in a responsible way and are an effective tool to discourage fly tipping in the area. Caddick Construction are proud to be able to contribute to creating a space that local residents can be proud to call home.”

Our strategy to tackle waste and fly tipping in neighbourhoods
In autumn 2022 we launched our new Waste Management Strategy to tackle the amount of rubbish that affects our neighbourhoods and pledge our support for Oldham Council’s Don’t Trash Oldham campaign.
On a rolling programme until March 2025 we are targeting places where litter and fly-tipping are causes for concern. We’re arranging community litter picks, waste collection days, engagement activities to promote good recycling habits and improving bin facilities at communal blocks of flats. Following this work, we are asking customers to play their part in keeping their neighbourhood looking good.
Look out for updates on our website to see when we’ll be coming to your neighbourhood.
