Spring clean for South Chadderton neighbourhood is a success
20/04/2023
South Chadderton benefitted from a spring clean recently, when our community clean up days came to the neighbourhood.
The sessions were held on Wednesday 29 and Thursday 30 March and organised by our Neighbourhood Care and Neighbourhoods teams in partnership with contractor, Connolly’s, which is delivering our investment programme to make more than 200 homes more energy efficient and economical to run.
We came together to provide two free skips each day for residents to dispose of their unwanted bulky household items in.
To help make an even bigger impact, teams litter picked their way round the area too - collecting 40 bags of rubbish - while Oldham Council colleagues took the opportunity to talk to locals about recycling and respond to questions about managing rubbish.
The waste collection days follow our community litter pick in the South Chadderton area on 15 February. We were joined by local volunteers who turned out to show their neighbourhood some love and clear an impressive 20 bagfuls of litter and get rid of one van load of debris. Big thanks to all who joined us and helped make a difference to our customers and local community.
David Wrigley, our Head of Neighbourhood Care, said: “We want to provide great neighbourhoods where customers feel proud to live, and these sessions in South Chadderton are the latest in a rolling programme of activity to tidy up FCHO-owned areas and make them cleaner and greener.
“It was great to see so many customers take part in the days and thanks go to Connolly’s for their support to make them a success.
“The activity in South Chadderton alone cost c.£4k to deliver, and annually we spend more than £250k dealing with fly tipping and rubbish in our neighbourhoods – putting pressure on our services and diverting money and resources away from other important areas for our customers.
“Residents have told us they welcome the improvement work we’re doing, but after we’ve delivered a clean-up, we want people to be pro-active and keep their neighbourhood looking good, as we can’t keep coming back.
“If everyone does their bit, we can all enjoy tidier, more attractive and sustainable places to live – now and in the future.”
Our waste management strategy
We care about our neighbourhoods and the community waste collection days and community litter picks are part of our three-year waste management strategy, which also includes increased enforcement action against those who fly tip - issuing charges starting at £132 and ensuring the items are cleared – and improving bin facilities for communal blocks.
