Volunteers take to the water to clean Oldham’s Canalways

03/04/2025

Last weekend colleague volunteers, families and children teamed up with Northern Lily, a local social enterprise, to tackle litter in Oldham’s canalways. The group used canoes and kayaks to sail down the canal and armed with their gloves, grabbers, and plenty of determination, they took to the water (and the banks) to clear out the waste.

Saturday’s clean-up focused on the Failsworth area, where the canal had previously been criticised by locals for its poor condition. By joining forces with Northern Lily, a group dedicated to caring for both the environment and the community, volunteers were able to clear out a significant amount of rubbish to make a real impact on the local environment and canal wildlife.

Stronger Communities Manager Naomi Martin-Smith said: "Thanks to everyone who volunteered to make a big difference to this part of the canal by giving up their Saturday morning.

“The clean-up was a brilliant example of what happens when people come together with a shared passion to go out and improve where they live.

“But it’s not just about picking up litter, it’s about pride, partnership and positive action, and we were delighted to be involved because we’re proud to support initiatives that empower residents to take ownership of their neighbourhoods.”

Director of Northern Lily Victoria Holden said: “The canals are amazing spaces for nature but because they are hidden, they tend to get the worst of fly tipping and litter.

“Funding and support from FCHO are absolutely vital for us to be able to deliver these sessions, look after our area and help keep it litter-free for people and nature to enjoy."

As part of the Great British Spring Clean, a nationwide campaign rallying communities to roll up their sleeves and take a stand against litter, our stronger communities and neighbourhoods teams have been working alongside community groups and local volunteers to support a series of litter-picking events, across Oldham this spring.

So far we have cleaned up areas including our new development at West Vale, Sholver community, parts of Chadderton and Failsworth.
